Brian Flaherty is an Assistant
Professor of Psychology at the University of Washington, a position
he began in the fall of 2005. He is conducts both methodological and
substantive research in the health and social sciences.
With respect to statistical and methodological research, Brian's
current work focuses on modeling change over time and measurement.
Specifically, much of his work has involved using the latent class
model to address questions in both areas. With respect to
substantive research, much of his work involves examining substance
use onset and dependence.
Brian was a graduate student in the department of Human Development
and Family Studies at The Pennsylvania State University. As a
graduate student, Brian was primarily affiliated with The
Methodology Center at Penn State, studying psychometrics, latent
variable modeling, and the analysis of change. During graduate
school, Brian began working with members of the Robert Wood Johnson
Research Network on the Etiology of Tobacco Dependence (TERN).
Through his work with TERN, he developed a keen interest in tobacco
research, particularly the onset of tobacco use and the development
of dependence. Following graduate school, he continued his
methodological and substantive research as a TERN Faculty Scholar
and a Research Scientist at The Methodology Center at Penn State. In
the Fall of 2004, he was invited to participate in National Cancer
Institute's Tobacco and Health Disparities Research Network.
